Finally, he and his family can crawl out from the financial burden that has plagued them for the past few years. After a few months, they put it on the market for $174,000 - nearly four times the purchase price. They purchase Kathy's house for $45,000 and do some quick fix-ups on the property. Things are going very well for Massoud Behrani and his family. ![]() It would have been helpful to reinforce that fact, especially considering the nature of some of the plot points. It turns out that the story takes place a few years after the Iranian Revolution (which started in 1979), so it's probably set in the early or mid 1980's. ![]() Another frustrating thing was the fact that the movie never makes it clear when this story takes place. Obviously, the movie is far more complicated than that, but Dreamworks sure didn't seem to do a very good job of making that clear to the general masses. Well, stop the presses! I know I can't resist a good story about people arguing over a house. And all the trailers and previews I saw conveyed only one thing - people arguing over a house. I know it's traditional to keep the name, but in this case, couldn't an exception have been made? The title is booooring. (It was nominated for three Oscars, but it didn't win any of them.) For starters, the movie is based on the book of the same name by André Dubus III. It almost seemed like it was being aimed directly at the Oscars. I don't know if that was deliberate, but somehow this movie didn't seem marketed for the masses. What frustrated me the most about this movie was how badly marketed it was. However, if you prefer well-made, intelligent movies, this one is worth checking out. It has some points to make, and it makes them in a gritty, unapologetic way. This is not a happy movie that the whole family will enjoy watching. House of Sand and Fog is mostly overlooked by audiences, but this movie is very well done, and worth seeing.Īs I'm sure most of you have already figured out, House of Sand and Fog is not for everyone.

The downside of intelligence is that you can use it in self-destructive ways. This is especially true of less intelligent species, because the conditions to be sessile are too rare to waste "instinct space" on, but humans who have a much more broader range of behaviors with far more learning behaviors, so we can become very sessile. Some animals are less lazy than humans: many animals will also instinctively stay active even when provided with the conditions to be sessile, but when forced to not be active we do indeed see muscle atrophy. We used to see atrophy in animals a lot more, but with animal welfare laws we usually don't keep animals in tiny cages that prevent them from moving anymore. Walking 10km a day or more is normal for most humans without advanced technology. If you are constantly active you don't need to "exercise" to build muscle - you are getting loads of physical activity. Consider how physically fit hunter-gatherer humans are in terms of their cardiovascular systems. However in nature it is hard to be sessile. If anyone has some useful references with quantitative data, that would be great as well.Īnimal muscle does atrophy and gain depending on use.įirst, animal muscle does atrophy if the animal is too sessile. I also recall reading a study in grad school of an orangutan pulling over 600 lbs with one arm clearly not straining according to the article (though I failed to find the reference while searching today, unfortunately). I am skeptical of this last part because some estimates of gorilla strength suggest they can lift upwards of 10 times their body weight. So do animals like gorillas have muscles that either start and stay stronger than humans or just atrophy much more slowly? Or is it just a matter of constant use? Or is it just a different proportion of fast vs slow twitch muscles as this study suggests? Meanwhile, I've watched various types of monkeys and apes do handfuls of seemingly effortless pull ups at zoos as part of their play. However, even then I would have struggled to do more than a few pull ups with a 170 lbs strapped to my waste. ![]() ![]() I used to workout heavily and used to hold my high school bench press record (330 lbs in the 160-171 lb weight class). However, last I checked a male silver back can easily lift several times its own body weight. I cannot imagine ever seeing one in the wild intentionally doing something akin to weightlifting like humans solely for the purpose of getting stronger (if I'm wrong about this, that would be fascinating to know as well). Suppose I consider the silver back gorilla as an example. However, between November 2020 through March of 2021, Mukja’s sales have gone up 50 percent. “We took a lot of damage having to pay for months we weren’t able to be open,” Chang said. Mukja’s situation is still “troubling, but significantly better” according to the owners. The two kept pushing forward and realized their dream of opening Mukja last October. “We knew about COVID when it hit China, but we didn’t think it would have the global impact that it did,” Chang said. Construction workers were unable to report to their jobs and the restaurant’s permits, already in process with the City of Atlanta, were halted as City Hall shut down. Just after work began on the restaurant’s interior, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States. “It took a little more than a year, and we finally found this location at Metropolis ourselves when we were just driving around the city.” “Fresh out of college, it was the hardest thing ever,” Chang said. He and Chung decided to give opening a restaurant a shot, with Chung handling the financial parts of the business and Chang taking on the role of chef. When Chang took a franchising class and used a fast-casual Korean fried chicken restaurant as a project, he was sold. “When I was taking my hospitality courses, we kept joking this could be a restaurant concept.” “While we were living together, I was always cooking random recipes and menus for people,” Chang said. They decided to room together while attending college - Chung was in school at Georgia Tech, and Chang transferred to the hospitality school at Georgia State University. It was during his rehabilitation at Shepherd Center in Buckhead that Chang reconnected with Chung, who he had originally met on a church retreat. “It was a journey of rehab and situating what life would be or could be,” said Chang. On the way home after taking exams, Chang was in a terrible car accident that paralyzed him from the waist down. His family moved to Georgia in 2006, and he enrolled in college. His family is from Joella-do, a province in Korean known for its delicious dishes, and he was also drawn to the Latin-Korean fusion that is a huge part of L.A.’s thriving restaurant scene.
